news-46466 Tue, 04 Aug 2026 12:00:23 +0200 Elevated temperatures in exam venues – Current measures and guidance https://www.jura.uni-passau.de/en/news/news/elevated-temperatures-in-exam-venues-current-measures-and-guidance We are aware that the current high temperatures are creating additional challenges for students sitting examinations. Please find below an update on the situation, the measures we are taking, and some practical advice for staying as comfortable as possible. Affected exam venues
The heat is most noticeable in the following spaces:

  • Triple-court sports hall and multi-purpose hall (Sports Centre)
  • Room NK 412 (Nikolakloster Building)
  • Innsteg Auditorium

Why relocation is not possible
The capacity of air-conditioned rooms on campus is limited. Due to the large number of exam candidates, it is not feasible to move examinations to cooler venues. Unfortunately, we are also unable reschedule or move examinations at this short notice, as this would create clashes with the state examination for the Teacher Education Programme.

Measures we are taking
The following measures are being implemented to reduce the heat load:

  • Windows are opened from 21:00 each night.
  • From 6:30, doors are also opened to allow cooler morning air to ventilate the venues.
  • Once outdoor temperatures match indoor temperatures (typically in the mid-to-late morning), windows are closed and external blinds lowered to prevent further solar heating.
  • Invigilators are recording room temperatures at the start and end of each examination. To this end, portable temperature monitors have been placed in the affected venues.

Tips for exam candidates

  • Cooling packs: Cooling packs are permitted in the exams under the given circumstances. For effective cooling, it is recommended that you temporarily place one on your wrist or the nape of your neck, where major blood vessels run close to the skin. This can help support circulation and reduce core body temperature.
  • Stay hydrated: Make sure you drink enough fluids – ideally chilled, but not ice-cold. You are permitted to bring beverages into the exam venue.
  • Wear light clothing: We recommend wearing clothing that is light and airy.

Libraries
Our libraries are currently being cooled. However, due to the high cooling load, combined with the amount of cooling capacity used, a slight rise in temperature may occur in the afternoons. Based on current readings, the room temperatures are expected to remain below 30°C.

We recognise that this situation is far from ideal and wish to assure you that we are taking every possible measure at our disposal to support you during this period.

news-46324 Wed, 08 Jul 2026 11:23:04 +0200 GEMA licences: 20% discount, but you must register the music yourself https://www.jura.uni-passau.de/en/news/news/gema-licences-20-discount-but-you-must-register-the-music-yourself Anyone who plays music in public in Germany – for example, at end-of-semester parties and concerts, but also as part of university projects – needs a licence from the copyright collecting society GEMA; university students and staff are not exempt from this obligation. Thanks to a master agreement concluded between the German Rectors’ Conference and GEMA, members of the University of Passau are entitled to a 20 percent discount on the standard rates.

Important: Even with the master agreement, you must still register separately.

A use that is subject to GEMA fees occurs when music is performed in public. To obtain the rights for this, you must register for the music in advance via the GEMA website or at their customer centre. For the discount to be applied, you must indicate at the time of registration that the University of Passau participates in the master agreement (Gesamtvertrag) with the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz). As before, the costs will be borne by the respective organisational units.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Commercial Operations and Tax Section at wirtschaftl.betaetigung@uni-passau.de.
