Why study Legal Tech with us?
The LL.B. Legal Tech programme is unique in Germany in that it combines a thorough legal education with key competencies in information systems. It is intended for all those who are interested in legal and technical challenges.
Upon successful completion of the degree programme students have the required skills to conceive, supervise and support technical applications for all legal areas of activity. To this end, the programme imparts knowledge of German and European law at state-examination level. Furthermore, you will acquire the ability to analyse and optimise legal processes as well as the necessary IT competencies. The degree programme thus opens up broad, modern occupational areas in companies or law firms. However, it is advisable to complete the conventional undergraduate law programme (state exam programme) at the renowned Faculty of Law in Passau in parallel in order to acquire the qualification for the full range of legal professions after completing the first and second state examinations for jurists.
Please see the infosheet from the Academic Advice Service [German content] for details.

- Integrated e-learning elements and interactive exercises in small groups

[content] Career prospects LLB Legal Tech
After completing the degree programme, you will immediately be able to plan, design and support IT-driven processes in law firms, companies, courts or administrative authorities, e.g. as a legal engineer or consultant. You will also be able to independently provide digital legal services as a state-authorised collection service.
Upon graduation, you can join a one-year master's programme in IT law throughout Germany. This opens up further career options, for example in data protection or IT compliance. Alternatively, you can strengthen your business skills by studying for an MBA degree.
If (as we recommend) you also enrol for the state examination programme at the same time as you study the bachelor's degree programme, you will be able to take the first and second state examinations for jurists. This opens the door to all legal occupations in the German public service (judge, public prosecutor, notary public), in public administration as well as in law firms and companies.
This bachelor's programme combines the compulsory law subjects, as defined by the Bavarian training and examination regulations for lawyers (JAPO), with the core syllabus of an information systems degree. The standard period of study is eight semesters, with courses in the fields of law, business/economics and computer science being offered in parallel from the first semester. Examinations are held at the end of the semester for most courses, and the marks are directly included in the final grade. Moreover, you will write a dissertation over a period of six weeks in the last semester of study.
You will start your studies with introductory courses in private and constitutional law as well mathematics and information systems. In the second semester, you will start attending your first legal-tech-specific courses (Algorithms and Law; Internet Computing). During the programme you will study the law of obligations, property law, criminal law, administrative law, including police and building law, European law, how to deal with data and databases (including Big Data), software development with scripting languages, but also central building blocks of business administration, such as accounting, organisation and cost accounting. In addition, you will take practice-relevant courses, for example on the legal framework for the provision of legal services and on IT and data law. An internship and a bachelor's dissertation, for which we will prepare you with an intensive course on legal writing, round off your studies.
The timetable offers sufficient time to take courses from the state law examination programme that are not covered in the bachelor's programme.
A module overview and list of courses to be taken can be found in the infosheet [German content].
With abitur or European qualifications
Prospective students with a higher education entrance qualification from Germany or the EEA region (e.g. German abitur or the Austrian matura) can enrol directly for this degree programme during the enrolment period.
If you have previously studied (or are currently studying) the undergraduate law programme (state examination programme), you can have assessments credited towards your LL.B. Legal Tech degree. We therefore recommend that you get advice from the programme advisers on credit transfers and start of studies before you apply. The guidelines for credit transfers (German) give you an overview of future credit transfer practice and answer frequently-asked questions.
Conversely, credit transfers for a good amount of coursework undertaken in this degree programme is possible if you want to study or complete the undergraduate law programme (state examination programme) after graduating from the LL.B. Legal Tech. On page 6 of the infosheet (German) you can find out which areas of the law degree programme you need to catch up on.
