About the programme
The LL.B. Legal Tech is unique in Germany, in that it combines a thorough legal education with key competencies in information systems. It is intended for all those who are interested in legal and also technical challenges.
Successfully completing the degree programme gives you the skills to design, administer and provide support for technical applications for all areas of activity in the legal field (‘Legal Tech’). The programme not only gives you in-depth knowledge of German and European law but also the ability to analyse and optimise legal procedures as well as the necessary understanding of IT. The degree programme therefore opens a wide and modern sphere of activity in companies, law firms, the judiciary or in governmental administration.
In parallel (dual study) or after the bachelor’s degree programme, you have the option of completing the undergraduate law programme and sit the First and Second State Examination for Jurists, which gives you access to all legal professions in Germany.
Features
- Unique in Germany in that this programme is geared towards students starting out on their law studies.
- Large proportion (39%) of information systems and legal tech courses
- Access to almost all courses taught in the undergradaute law programme (the standard state examination law programme covering civil, criminal and public law)
- It is possible to complete both the LL.B. and the undergraduate law programme in the same time it would take to study only the undergraduate law programme
- Provides an excellent basis for the information and communication law specialisation (university-set portion of the final examination)
- Integrated e-learning elements and interactive exercises in small groups
- Passau's law faculty enjoys an excellent reputation, as confirmed by the regular excellent results it achieves in leading ranking tables
After completing your LL.B. degree you are immediately in a position to plan, design and support IT-based processes in law firms and other businesses, law courts and administrative authorities, e.g. as a legal engineer or consultant. If provided with the respective state authorisation, you are qualified to provide independent digital legal services in a debt-collection context.
Upon graduating, you can also apply throughout Germany for the one-year master’s degree programme in IT law that will open up many further career options for you – for example in the context of data protection or IT compliance.
If you complete the undergraduate law programme (state examination programme) and complete the second state examination in law, the entire spectrum of the legal profession will be open to you – so you could work as a judge, public prosecutor, administrative lawyer, solicitor, notary public or a company lawyer).
This bachelor’s degree programme explores, on the one hand, the compulsory subjects in terms of the Bavarian training and examination regulations for jurists (JAPO) and, on the other hand, the core subjects of a programme in information systems. The standard period of study is eight semesters with courses in law, business, economics and computer science planned for each semester. Most of the courses end with a final examination, with the result incorporated into the final grade; you also have to submit a bachelor's dissertation in the final semester.
You begin your studies with foundation courses in civil and constitutional law, mathematics and information systems. As early as the second semester, you attend the first legal-tech-specific courses on algorithms and law as well as internet computing. As a result, you learn about the law of obligation, property law, criminal law, administrative law including police law and construction law, European law, handling data and databases (including big data), software development with scripting languages but also central elements of business administration such as accounting, organisational management and cost accounting. Beyond purely academic studies, you will attend practical courses such as on the legal framework for the provision of legal services as well as IT and data law. Your programme then culminates in a work placement and a bachelor's dissertation, which we prepare you for with an intensive course on legal writing.
The timetable offers sufficient space for you to attend courses for your undergraduate law programme that you need to catch up on if studying the LL.B. programme in parallel.
